Installing the Chrome Extension

Step-by-step guide to installing and configuring the Doctora Chrome extension

5 min readUpdated April 7, 2026

Note: This guide is for practices using cloud-based EHRs (RevolutionEHR, Eyefinity). If your EHR uses the Windows Desktop Agent (CrystalPM, OfficeMate), see the Windows Desktop Agent guide instead.

The Doctora Chrome extension connects your browser to your EHR system, enabling automatic data entry directly from your Doctora encounter. Once installed, Doctora can read your schedule, sync patient data, and write clinical findings into your EHR--no copy-pasting required.

This guide walks you through installation, sign-in, and verifying that everything is connected.

What You Need

  • Google Chrome (or a Chromium-based browser like Microsoft Edge or Brave), updated to the latest version.
  • A Doctora account. If you don't have one yet, visit app.doctora.io to get started.
  • Access to your EHR system in the same browser (RevolutionEHR or Eyefinity).

Step 1: Install the Extension

  1. Open Google Chrome and go to the Doctora Assistant on the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Click Add to Chrome.
  3. A pop-up will ask you to confirm. Click Add extension.

Chrome will download and install the extension. You should see a brief confirmation message near the top of the browser window.

Step 2: Pin the Extension to Your Toolbar

After installation, the Doctora icon may be hidden behind Chrome's puzzle-piece menu. Pinning it gives you one-click access.

  1. Click the puzzle piece icon in the top-right corner of Chrome (this is the Extensions menu).
  2. Find Doctora Assistant in the list.
  3. Click the pin icon next to it so it turns blue.

The Doctora icon will now appear permanently in your browser toolbar.

Step 3: Sign In

  1. Click the Doctora icon in your toolbar.
  2. A side panel will open on the right side of your browser.
  3. Sign in with the same email and password you use for your Doctora account at app.doctora.io.

Once signed in, the extension stays connected. You should not need to sign in again unless you explicitly sign out.

Step 4: Grant Microphone Access

Doctora uses your microphone to transcribe patient encounters in real time. The first time you start a recording, Chrome will ask for microphone permission.

  1. When the microphone permission prompt appears, click Allow.
  2. If you accidentally clicked Block or dismissed the prompt, you will see a dialog with instructions to fix it. Follow the steps shown--you will need to open Chrome's site settings for the extension and change Microphone to Allow.

Your microphone audio is processed securely and is never stored after transcription is complete.

Step 5: Verify the Connection Indicator

When you navigate to your EHR in Chrome, you will see a small Doctora icon in the bottom-right corner of the page. This icon has a colored dot that tells you the connection status at a glance.

What the Colors Mean

| Color | Status | What to Do | |-------|--------|------------| | Red | Not signed in to Doctora | Click the indicator to open the side panel and sign in. | | Orange | Signed in to Doctora, but your EHR is not detected | Make sure you are logged in to your EHR in the same browser window. | | Green | Ready | Doctora is connected to both your account and your EHR. You are all set. |

The indicator also shows a tooltip when you hover over it with more detail about the current state.

Step 6: Open the Side Panel

To use Doctora while working in your EHR:

  1. Click the Doctora icon in your browser toolbar, or click the connection indicator (the small icon in the bottom-right corner of your EHR page).
  2. The Doctora side panel opens on the right side of your browser, alongside your EHR.
  3. From here you can start recordings, review AI-generated notes, and push data into your EHR.

The side panel stays open as you navigate between patients and screens in your EHR.

Troubleshooting

The extension icon does not appear in Chrome

  1. Type chrome://extensions in your address bar and press Enter.
  2. Make sure Doctora Assistant is listed and the toggle is turned on (blue).
  3. If it is not listed, reinstall it from the Chrome Web Store.
  4. Try pinning it again using the puzzle-piece menu (see Step 2).

The dot is red and will not change

This means the extension is not signed in to your Doctora account.

  1. Click the Doctora icon to open the side panel.
  2. Sign out if you see an active session, then sign back in.
  3. If the problem persists, try removing and reinstalling the extension.

The dot is orange

This means Doctora is connected but cannot detect your EHR session.

  1. Make sure you are logged in to your EHR (RevolutionEHR or Eyefinity) in the same browser.
  2. Try refreshing the EHR tab.
  3. If you use multiple browser windows, make sure both Doctora and your EHR are in the same window.

The microphone is not working

  1. Click the lock icon (or tune icon) in Chrome's address bar on your EHR page.
  2. Make sure Microphone is set to Allow.
  3. You can also check microphone permissions at chrome://settings/content/microphone and make sure Chrome itself has access to your microphone.
  4. On macOS, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and confirm that Google Chrome is allowed.

"Content scripts failed to load" error

This can happen if the extension was updated while your EHR tab was open.

  1. Refresh your EHR tab (press F5 or Ctrl+R / Cmd+R).
  2. The extension will reload automatically and the indicator should reappear.

Browser Requirements

  • Google Chrome is the recommended and fully supported browser.
  • Chromium-based browsers (Microsoft Edge, Brave, Arc) generally work but are not officially tested.
  • Firefox and Safari are not supported.
  • Keep your browser updated to the latest version for the best experience and security.
